That Mischa Barton is often described as a fashion "icon" has long been a source of surprise to The Fashion Police. This is, after all, a woman who has seen the inside of the Fashion Jail more often than most, although, to be fair, she's had her share of stylish moments too.

The stars put on their most glamorous gowns for a most popular and biggest internetional film festival called Cannes as Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman stole the show, but what Julianne Moore wore was criminal.

Flounces, ruffles and clever draping in pale pastel palettes were popular trends on the red carpet at the 61st Cannes Film Festival.

Australian actress Blanchett was the epitome of elegance as she arrived for the screening of Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles' film entry Blindness.

Actress Faye Dunaway knows what suits her age - she wore a figure hugging baby-pink satin gown topped with a matching sash jacket.

Gillian Anderson wore a structured white strapless dress, which she accessorised with sleek locks and what looks like some cosmetic enhancement to her lips.

Cannes Jury member Natalie Portman opted for a short length strapless dress with ruffles, but she bucked the trend of pale hues and plumped for an amethyst satin number.

And heading into Stuff.co.nz's hall of 'What were you thinking?' is actress Julianne Moore.

Her dress has got far too much going on - feathers, flowers, diamante, and the draping is most unflattering.

Another star that caught our attention was Mischa Barton. She may be getting bad press about those cellulite shots, but she’s getting good press from us for her navy blue Alberta Ferretti gown.

Eva Longoria attends the New York Social event of the season looking like the Belle of the Ball, this is by far our favorite look.

Jennifer Lopez really makes a fashion comeback in this gown, we knew she was waiting for this event to show off her fabulous post baby figure.

Hilary Duff as sure grown up, and really hot. She is also one of our best dressed on the list. Keep up the good work Hilary.

Forget the dress, which is so hott, but check out this girls body. Gisele showed up at the event just to let everyone knows she is the hottest and the highest paid model in the world. Younglifestyle really loves you Queen G.
We love Kate Mara's dress, its designed by the one and only Mr Zac Posen who escorted her to the event. Zac is such a brilliant designer all his creations are really hot. He is our favorite designer after the legendary Marc Jacobs.
